FA Cup Review: United, Chelsea advance as Cardiff, Huddersfield crash out

Each of the top-six Premier League sides in FA Cup action on Saturday came through unscathed, but the third round was not without its shocks.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all eased to victories, although none of them could match the standards set by seven-goal Tottenham at Tranmere Rovers on Friday.

United maintained their winning start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with goals from Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku downing Reading, while Alvaro Morata netted twice in Chelsea s win over Nottingham Forest.

In one of the day s late kick-offs, Arsenal travelled to Blackpool and teenager Joe Willock grabbed a brace in a 3-0 away success.

However, standout results came at Gillingham, where the League One outfit upset top-flight Cardiff City, and Bristol City, …

How does Conte compare to other Chelsea managers?

Chelsea are not known for their patience, so it is little surprise there is so much talk about the future of Antonio Conte amid a run of poor form.

The Premier League champions have been beaten heavily at home by Bournemouth and at Watford in the last week, leading to strong rumours Conte s days at Stamford Bridge are numbered.

The Italian would not be the first Chelsea manager to be fired the season after winning the title, with the same fate befalling both Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.

But how does Conte s 18-month spell at the club compare with some of his most notable predecessors, as well as other leading Premier League bosses?

With the help of Opta numbers, we take a look.

Mason Greenwood will begin to rebuild career with loan move to Getafe

Mason Greenwood has joined Spanish club Getafe on loan in a move that Manchester United say will allow the player to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood was suspended by United on January 30, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

The 21-year-old faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February that the case had been discontinued.

Bert van Marwijk appointed by UAE

The United Arab Emirates have appointed Bert van Marwijk as head coach, their FA announced on Wednesday.

Van Marwijk is the successor to Alberto Zaccheroni, who led UAE to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup they hosted this year.

Dutch boss Van Marwijk coached Australia at the 2018 World Cup and led Netherlands to the final of the 2010 tournament.

His first game in charge will be on Thursday against Saudi Arabia, whom he guided to last year s finals in Russia before leaving his post.

Prior to moving into international management, Van Marwijk coached Feyenoord twice either side of a spell with Borussia Dortmund.

The 66-year-old also had a short period in charge of Bundesliga side Hamburg between September 2013 and February 2014.

Zidane blames Barca for Madrid´s guard of honour snub

Barcelona only have themselves to blame for Real Madrid not giving the freshly crowned LaLiga champions a guard of honour ahead of Sunday s Clasico, according to Zinedine Zidane.

Ernesto Valverde s men sealed their procession to the title with a 4-2 win at Deportivo La Coruna last weekend, meaning there is only the usually ample amounts of pride to play for when Barca meet their bitter rivals at Camp Nou.

Madrid were greeted on to the field by a guard of honour – a pasillo to give the act its Spanish name – in 2008 by Barca having already been crowned champions and went on to a 4-1 Clasico win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona refused to offer a repeat performance at this season s game in Madrid last December, which came in the aftermath of Zidane s side li…

Mikel Arteta wants managers and referees to work together to improve football

Mikel Arteta has called for managers and referees to work together to improve the game after the Arsenal boss avoided punishment for a recent outburst.

The Spaniard was charged by the Football Association after labelling the decision to award Anthony Gordon’s goal in a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle last month a “disgrace” and “embarrassing”.

It was announced on Thursday afternoon, however, that Arteta had escaped a fine or a touchline ban after an independent panel ruled the FA charge E3.1 was not proven.

Arteta, who returns to the dugout this week having been suspended for last weekend’s loss at Aston Villa after picking up three yellow cards, said he was pleased with the process.

An independent Regulatory Commission has found the charge against Mi…

Kompany to put blood in the water for Man City lions

Vincent Kompany believes Manchester City have the hunger of a pack of lions as they approach a shot at history in the FA Cup final against Watford.

Pep Guardiola s men beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-1 last weekend to prevail in a relentless title race against Liverpool, adding back-to-back Premier League triumphs to consecutive EFL Cups.

If City overcome a Hornets side they have already beaten twice this season they will become the first team to complete a clean sweep of England s domestic trophies in the same season.

And, with the treble on the line, Kompany is not about to let his team-mates take their collective eye off the ball.

It s not about adding that achievement [the treble] to my CV, I don t care about my CV, he told reporters

PSG must end ´celebrity behaviour´, says Al-Khelaifi

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants an end to the celebrity behaviour at the club and hopes the return of Leonardo as sporting director will help achieve it.

Leonardo was on Friday named as Antero Henrique s successor in the role, which he previously held between 2011 and 2013.

Thomas Tuchel s side retained their Ligue 1 crown last season, but they exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage and the Coupe de la Ligue in the quarter-finals, before losing to Rennes in the Coupe de France final.

And following a largely underwhelming 2018-19 campaign at the Parc des Princes, Al-Khelaifi wants PSG s players to reconsider how they conduct themselves.

Players will have to assume their responsibilities even more than before, he told Franc…

Robben targets two more years at the ´highest level´

Arjen Robben is hoping to play for another two years at the highest level  but is not getting worried about his Bayern Munich future as he approaches the end of his contract.

Robben has been at Bayern since 2009, when he was cast aside by Real Madrid, and although injuries have been a regular hindrance, he has enjoyed an immensely successful time in Bavaria.

Now 34, Robben s deal expires at the end of the season and that could see him depart the Allianz Arena in search of new challenges, despite the club planning on having discussions with him later in the campaign.

While Bayern could ultimately say they are not willing to give him an extension, Robben feels very fit and will not give too much thought to the future of coach Jupp Heynckes when making a decision …

PSG appoint Pochettino: Alli, Eriksen and Messi could be targets for Poch

Mauricio Pochettino is back in management. Over a year after leaving Tottenham, the Argentine coach has landed one of Europe s biggest jobs.

Paris Saint-Germain appointed Pochettino as Thomas Tuchel s replacement on Saturday, and the new boss is sure to have ideas about players he would like to join him.

PSG have been hit by a run of injuries this season, with Neymar currently sidelined with an ankle problem.

Their owners are no strangers to big-money purchases, though the coronavirus pandemic has made all of Europe s big clubs take stock and rein in their spending.

But who could be the likely candidates to join PSG under Pochettino?
