Former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt is recovering in hospital after successful heart surgery, the club have confirmed.
The 55-year-old was admitted for treatment on Monday after complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing.
Spurs tweeted on Tuesday: After undergoing successful heart surgery yesterday, we can confirm Gary Mabbutt is now in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.
The former England international spent 16 years at White Hart Lane, winning the UEFA Cup in 1984 and captaining the side to an FA Cup triumph in 1991.
Ex-Spurs striker Gary Lineker tweeted after hearing the news: See Gary Mabbutt is to undergo heart surgery. When they operate it will be the biggest heart they ve ever seen. Thinking of you, skipper.

Stuart Baxter has resigned from his post as coach of South Africa with immediate effect.
South Africa shocked Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt en route to the quarter-finals in June, but Baxter, whose second spell in charge of Bafana Bafana began in 2017, believes the time is right to move aside.
The former Finland and Kaizer Chief s boss has said it is the correct time for South Africa to move into a new cycle, as focus switches to qualification for the 2021 AFCON and 2022 World Cup.
I feel it s time for someone else to take over and I have decided to resign from my position. It is my personal decision, Baxter told BBC Sport.
Going to the AFCON, this squad had not lost in a year, something that was not easy considering we were introducing new players.…
Emile Smith Rowe has impressed for Arsenal this term, but he is now revelling in getting the chance to train and play alongside a Tottenham star.
Smith Rowe – who is Arsenal s joint-top scorer in the Premier League this season with four goals – was initially left out of Gareth Southgate s England squad for this month s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.
However, the withdrawals of James Ward-Prowse and Marcus Rashford, as well as doubts over Mason Mount s fitness, resulted in the 21-year-old midfielder linking up with Southgate s senior squad at St George s Park.
Smith Rowe is thrilled by the opportunity, though perhaps risked the wrath of Arsenal fans as he singled out training with Harry Kane – England s captain and Spurs talisman, alb…
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that teams will be allowed to make up to five substitutions in games during the Africa Cup of Nations to help combat the impact of COVID-19 related absences.
Rules also state that teams must play if they have at least 11 players available, even if that does not include a recognised goalkeeper, or else will forfeit the game.
The tournament gets underway on Sunday when hosts Cameroon take on Burkina Faso.
A statement on the CAF website outlined the measures, confirming that: Each team will be permitted to use a maximum of five substitutes.
To reduce disruption to the match, each team will have a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions during the game; substitutions may also be made at…
Arsenal open their UEFA Champions League campaign at Marseille hoping that their experience can carry them through a tough group.
Arsene Wenger s men head to the Stade Velodrome for their first encounter in Group F on Wednesday and know they will need to start well, with difficult games against Napoli and Borussia Dortmund to come.
Arsenal have qualified from the group stage in each of the last 13 seasons, reaching the final in 2005-06 and the semi-finals in 2008-09.
Defender Laurent Koscielny is aware of the importance of beginning with a win, and feels that their past experience in the competition could prove vital as they attempt to negotiate their way into the knock-out stages.
The most important thing in the Champions League is to start well, Koscielny told …
Manchester United will need to win the FA Cup to qualify for Europe after they finished eighth in the Premier League despite winning 2-0 at Brighton on the final day.
Diogo Dalot scored against the run of play and substitute Rasmus Hojlund added a late clincher to give United consecutive wins to end their top-flight campaign before they face rivals Manchester City at Wembley.
But the Red Devils had to better Newcastle s result on Sunday to finish seventh and Eddie Howe s men won an entertaining match 4-2 against Brentford.
Joao Pedro twice came close to scoring for Brighton, who had most of the better chances, but defeat in Roberto De Zerbi s final game left the hosts 11th in the table, pipped to a top-half finish by Crystal Palace.
Another goal in red fo…
Socceroos winger Tommy Oar is set to make his first appearance for Brisbane Roar in over six years when the A-League leaders visit Melbourne City on Friday.
Oar will travel as part of Brisbane s 17-man squad, with Roar coach John Aloisi declaring, I m sure he ll play a part .
The 24-year-old left-footer departed Roar in February 2010 to join Utrecht in the Eredivisie after just 23 A-League appearances in an orange shirt, with Oar notching two goals in that period.
He s travelling, so we ll travel with 17 and Tommy s part of that, and I m sure he ll play a part, Aloisi said on Thursday.
Aloisi added: Tommy will add to the way we play.
We know he s very good one-v-one. He s got good delivery, he can also score goals, he s got a great left foot and…
Hull City have clinched the signings of midfielder pair Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore from Tottenham.
Huddlestone moves to the KC Stadium on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee while Livermore joins on a season-long loan.
The 26-year-old moved to White Hart Lane in 2005 from Derby County and went on to score 15 times in 188 appearances.
Huddlestone has four caps for England, having made his international bow against Brazil in November 2009.
Livermore came through the youth system at White Hart Lane, breaking into the first team under Harry Redknapp in the 2011-12 campaign.
After making 38 appearances in all competitions, he made his England debut against Italy in August 2012, but found himself used less by Andre Villas-Boas and he now embarks on t…
Competition: Premier League
Market: Man Utd to win against Bournemouth
Odds:
Manchester United host Bournemouth at Old Trafford for tonight’s Premier League clash. The game was rearranged after having previously been abandoned on the weekend, but both sides will want to sign off for the season with a win.
United have all but missed out on a Champions League place for next season, and are currently 6th in the Premier League table with 63 points from 37 games. They will be in the Europa League for 2016/17 if they avoid defeat, and were ending the season strongly before a West Ham defeat so Bournemouth will be wary of their threat.
Louis van Gaal side have three wins from their last five games, keeping three clean sheets to boot. Bournemouth are moti…
